Journey
Some names are chosen for flair. DOTTi The Deity chose his to announce a calling. His sound has long carried the mystic pulse people compared to ancestral chants, so he leaned into it, pairing “DOTTi” from Oladotun with a title that reflects his spiritual, culture-first approach to music.
Born Okeowo Oladotun Alani on July 20, 1994, in Ibadan, he spent his early years between cities, eventually moving to Lagos to live with his grandparents. Music found him early; at six, he began composing songs while perched at his grandfather’s dining table. His path later led to The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where he earned a National Diploma in Music Technology in 2013.
His style, which he describes as “Nu Age Folk,” fuses Nigerian folk traditions, Yoruba cosmology, Soul, Jazz, and contemporary influences. DOTTi entered the industry professionally in December 2019 with Jolly Christmas. In 2020, he introduced his debut EP, Songs in Isolation. A defining milestone came in 2021, when he emerged as the first winner of MTN Y’ello Star.
His 2022 hit “Forever Sweet” expanded his reach, becoming a beloved wedding anthem with over a million streams and earning a spot in the film Breath of Life. He followed it with the EP For You Knew Me in May 2023.
DOTTi counts Fatoumata Diawara, Mali Music, Asa, Lagbaja, King Sunny Ade, and Oumou Sangare among his influences. His collaborations span respected Nigerian creatives such as Cobhams Asuquo, RotimiKeys, Omawumi, and Falz. Beyond his personal discography, he has written and performed vocals for major commercial campaigns, including GTBank Quick Credit and the British American Tobacco Foundation’s “Wealth is Here.”
